Dear CCBC Family,
On behalf of the CCBC Executive Board, I am happy to announce the CCBC endorsed candidates in the upcoming primary election. The Endorsement Recommendation Committee worked very hard in vetting candidates seeking our endorsement. A heartfelt "THANK YOU" to each committee member for giving up your personal time to assist the CCBC in this important process. Please be advised that due to the limitation of time by our volunteer committee we identified "key" races to pursue and did not include any candidates that did not have a primary race. We will begin the endorsement process for the general election in July.
It's important to note that although a candidate may have a primary endorsement, it does not mean that they will receive the CCBC endorsement should they move forward to a general election. Additionally, in those key races where we interviewed, several African American candidates did not participate in our endorsement process and therefore were not considered in their race. Those races are indicated with an "*".
As a 100% volunteer community organization, there is always lot’s of work to be done in racial equality and social justice public policy. If you're not a member but would like to have a say in who we endorse, we encourage you to visit our website www.CCBlackCaucus.com and join. The CCBC endorsement is an endorsement solely representative of the CCBC organization and it's members. And although other organizations and individuals may find these endorsements helpful, voting is restricted to CCBC members current on their dues or have a financial waiver.
A gentle reminder that the endorsements herein reflect our nonpartisan designation. It is important to our work that although we may not align 100% on all issues, that we support candidates that support our agenda. Therefore, the Endorsement Recommendation Committee may take into consideration many factors including, candidate questionnaire, community surveys, ethics and authenticity, CCBC membership and community participation, previous working experience with CCBC on policy issues that align to our Platform,
After the big success of CCBC’s legislative agenda in 2015, we were happy to include for endorsement legislators in leadership roles we worked with that passed the most comprehensive education reforms in Nevada history, and in particular those that benefit African American students. It was extremely rewarding to work with Nevada Department of Education on our needs and champion our cause, Nevada legislative committees and legislators writing/passing the legislation, and the Governor's Office providing leadership, all to help African American students achieve. Included in bills we asked for were Victory Schools (providing $50 million in categorical funding for low income students), proficiency gap legislation that requires all districts to capture and report proficiency by race/ethnicity, maintaining quality teachers legislation that keeps effective teachers in low performing schools where they're needed most, and Assemblyman Munford's multicultural education legislation that requires changes to state standards that include diversity and cultural competency professional development. There are many other education reforms you can read about on the Nevada legislative website.
We’re busy planning our strategy for the 2017 legislative session and discussing policy and our Platform with candidates running this election cycle. We welcome your help and hope you will renew your membership and join us in this important work.
